Tarangire National Park is renowned for its large elephant herds and diverse wildlife. If you’re visiting around January, you may be lucky enough to witness the calving season, during which hundreds of thousands of wildebeest calves are born in a synchronized birthing event. Its steep walls enclose a pristine wilderness of savannah, acacia woodlands, and shimmering lakes and swamps.
The drive down into the crater is an adventure in itself. Once on the crater floor, you’ll be surrounded by large numbers of wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, and over 500 bird species. The crater is also one of the best places to spot the endangered black rhino. After a full afternoon of exploration, you’ll drive to your accommodation in Karatu for dinner and an overnight stay.
