8-Day Mid-Range Mara River Great Migration

Overview

This 8-day safari with Hamarayuni Tours offers an incredible opportunity to witness the Great Migration, one of nature’s most spectacular events. From late July to early October, the migration is typically in the northern part of the Serengeti, where you may witness the dramatic crossing of the Mara River as wildebeests and zebras brave crocodile-infested waters in search of fresh grazing. This safari also provides countless opportunities to explore Tanzania’s rich wildlife and diverse landscapes, including Tarangire, Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro Crater, and the Serengeti.

Depending on your arrival time, you’ll have the chance to relax and prepare for the adventure of a lifetime. Arusha is a bustling city and an essential part of safari life in northern Tanzania, serving as the gateway to the region’s most iconic national parks.

Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

After breakfast, your Hamarayuni Tours guide will pick you up from your accommodation, and you’ll drive to Tarangire National Park. The journey takes approximately two and a half hours on well-maintained tarmac roads. Tarangire is named after the Tarangire River, which is the primary source of water for wildlife during the dry season.

The park is famous for its large herds of elephants, often seen congregating near the river. You may also spot giraffes, bushbucks, hartebeests, and a variety of predators, including lions and leopards. Tarangire is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with more breeding species of birds than anywhere else on the planet. The park’s landscape is dotted with ancient baobab trees, some of which are believed to be over a thousand years old. Enjoy a picnic lunch inside the park before continuing your game drive. In the evening, you’ll transfer to your accommodation in Karatu.

The Serengeti is truly spectacular, famous for its vast open grasslands that provide excellent wildlife sightings. The park is home to an abundance of wildlife, including impalas, buffaloes, crocodiles, and hippos. You’ll also have a good chance of encountering predators such as lions, cheetahs, and leopards. After an exciting game drive, you’ll head to your luxurious accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 4: Central to Northern Serengeti in Search of the Great Migration

After breakfast, you’ll journey through the Serengeti towards the northern region, stopping along the way to enjoy more wildlife sightings. The Serengeti is best known for the annual Great Migration, where millions of wildebeests, zebras, and antelopes move in a continuous cycle in search of fresh grazing.

At this time of year, the migration is typically in the northern Serengeti, and you may witness the dramatic river crossings at the Mara River. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience as the herds brave crocodile-infested waters and predators lying in wait.

Accommodation: Mara Heritage Camp
Meals & Drinks: All meals included; drinks not included

Day 5: Northern Serengeti

The landscape in the northern Serengeti is distinct, featuring hills, riverine forests, plains, and rocky outcrops. The Mara River cuts through this region, providing the setting for the awe-inspiring river crossings. During these crossings, over two million wildebeests, hundreds of thousands of zebras, and antelopes attempt to cross the river in search of grazing and water.

Nile crocodiles and predators like lions, hyenas, leopards, and cheetahs add to the drama, making this a thrilling spectacle. Spend the day exploring this unique area and witnessing the wonders of the migration.

Accommodation: Mara Heritage Camp
Meals & Drinks: All meals included; drinks not included

Day 6: Northern to Central Serengeti

After breakfast, you’ll slowly make your way back to the central Serengeti, enjoying an en-route game drive. You may choose to continue your search for the migration or explore other areas of the park. Every day in the Serengeti is different, and there’s always something new to discover.

Day 7: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater

This morning, you’ll journey back through the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area, with opportunities to spot more wildlife along the way. It’s common to see giraffes grazing on the lush slopes as you drive.

By lunchtime, you’ll reach the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most stunning wildlife havens on Earth. The crater was formed when a massive volcano collapsed two to three million years ago. Its steep walls enclose a pristine wilderness of savannah, acacia woodlands, and shimmering lakes.

The drive down into the crater is an adventure in itself. Once on the crater floor, you’ll be surrounded by large herds of wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, and over 500 bird species. The crater is also one of the best places to spot the endangered black rhino. After an afternoon game drive, you’ll drive to your accommodation in Karatu.

Day 8: Lake Manyara to Arusha

On your final day, you’ll drive to Lake Manyara National Park, your last destination on this epic safari. Lake Manyara is a small but diverse park, known for its compact size and dramatic scenery. The park’s namesake, a shallow salt lake, covers a large area and is home to thousands of wading birds, including flamingos and over 500 other bird species.

You may also spot baboons, elephants, and the famous tree-climbing lions in the park’s evergreen forest. Enjoy a picnic lunch inside the park before concluding your game drive. In the afternoon, you’ll be dropped off at your chosen location, such as Arusha, Kilimanjaro Airport, or Arusha Airport.
