ACCOMODATIONS

Where do I sleep during a safari in Tanzania?

The places that you stay during your Tanzania Safari can be a source of unforgettable memories. There are different types of accommodation available and we hope the following information will help inform your choices.

1.Hotels & Lodges

are easy to get your head around. These are permanent buildings with solid walls! They are full-service facilities with private rooms or cottages. They have private bathrooms, restaurants and lounges. Some have swimming pools. Many lodges are stunning; made with local materials and inspired by local designs and the environment. You will find Hotels & Lodges both inside and outside of the National Parks. There is a wide range of Hotels & Lodges ranging from budget to ultra-luxury.

For many people, part of the appeal of coming on a Tanzania Safari is that you have the chance to sleep under canvas. There are two very different options:

Tented Camps

Tented camps in Tanzania offer a unique safari experience, combining the adventure of sleeping under canvas with the comfort of a lodge. These camps, whether permanent or semi-permanent, are typically located in prime game-viewing areas and provide spacious, well-appointed tents with beds, private bathrooms, and high-quality meals served in a designated dining tent. Many are built on solid bases, ensuring stability and comfort while maintaining an authentic connection to the wilderness.

One of the most exciting aspects of staying in a tented camp is the close proximity to wildlife. The camps are unfenced, allowing animals to roam freely. It is not uncommon to hear lions roaring in the distance, zebras grazing outside your tent, or even a giraffe nibbling on a nearby acacia tree. While this can be thrilling, safety is always a priority—trained guards escort guests to and from their tents after dark, and as far as we know, no animals have learned how to unzip a heavy canvas tent!

Types of Tented Camps

Tented camps in Tanzania fall into two main categories:

Permanent Tented Camps

These camps remain in the same location year-round and often feature raised decking, outdoor dining areas, and sometimes even a swimming pool. They range from rustic to ultra-luxurious, catering to different preferences and budgets.

Mobile / Semi-Permanent Tented Camps

Commonly found in the Serengeti, these camps move periodically to follow wildlife migrations, ensuring guests have the best possible game-viewing experience. For example, a mobile camp may be in the Northern Serengeti from June to November, then relocate to Ndutu in the Southern Serengeti from December to April to follow the Great Migration.

The level of comfort and amenities at any tented camp depends more on the accommodation provider than the camp type. Prices and facilities vary significantly, so it’s important to discuss your preferences and budget with your Hamarayuni Tours Safari Planner.

Our team will be happy to create an itinerary that includes accommodations tailored to your needs, whether you prefer a specific type of tented camp or a mix of different styles for a diverse experience.

Basic Camping Safaris (Tents on the ground)

On a basic camping safari, guests sleep in small private tents in designated campsites in or near National Parks. You sleep inside a sleeping bag on a roll up mattress. Our safari crew sets up the camp every evening and prepares all your meals. Facilities at the campsites are basic. They include shared washrooms and showers.
